I Want a Camel's Hair Blazer!
Mark 1:6
And John was clothed with camel's hair,
and a belt of skin around his loins,
and eating locusts and wild honey.
Does it pique your curiosity that John's wardrobe and diet are described before John's preaching?
Believers Bible Commentary:
His food was sufficient to maintain life and strength, but was scarcely luxurious. He was a man who subordinated all these things to the glorious task of making Christ known. Perhaps he could have been rich, but he chose to be poor. He thus became a fitting herald of Him who had nowhere to lay His head. We learn here that simplicity should characterize all who are servants of the Lord.
The epistles (1 Timothy 2:9) give us a one word dress code for believers of this age — MODEST. Beyond being restrained in dress by a proper sense of shame, the next governing factor is the glory of God. What John wore and what John ate along with what John preached were to the glory of God. His apparel and diet were carefully chosen to not contradict his message. In fact, John and his message were a package. Everything about John was consistent with his message and consistent with his Savior.
Oh to have such a consistency of life!!! God, help me to live to your glory!
